Why I Chose to Study in the UK

By Men Mana, Chevening Scholar

In September 2019, I started a Master of Public Policy at the University of Warwick as a 2019-2020 Chevening Scholar. As a policy analyst, I’m bombarded with various public problems. Some problems have solutions while others don’t. A UK university degree will broaden my perspective and enable me to interact with students from different backgrounds. I’ll learn from world-class teachers, which will allow me to come up with innovative solutions to public problems in the Cambodia context.

Why did I choose the UK for my higher education? UK universities are consistently ranked highly in the global university rankings, and most have excellent reputations for teaching and research. In addition, the UK has a rich and interesting history. It will be fantastic for me to explore its history and cultural heritage, as well as its diversity. I’m motivated by how the UK has evolved to what it is today. Finally, the UK is known for its good governance: it’s democratic and inclusive. I often watch debates on certain public policy issues conducted by the House of Commons at Westminster Abbey. It’s very interesting to see how people in power in the UK are questioned by their counterparts, and how the system of checks and balances works.

Without the support of IDP, my journey to the UK would not have been so smooth. Out of many prestigious universities, I had difficultly identifying the one that not only matched my needs, but also had a good reputation. Moreover, I did not know what documentation was required by the university. I also need to be mentally prepared for all the changes to come. Thanks to IDP, I have been selected to study at one of the top ten universities in the UK, my application and immigration/visa processes have been stress-free, and I’m ready and prepared to embark on my academic journey.

For those who wish to further their education overseas, I highly recommend IDP. It has a team of skilled counsellors who really know what they are doing, from choosing universities tailored to your preferences to working with universities to update your application and providing general advice on how to successfully studying overseas. I’m really happy, and I don’t think I could have found a better service and more supportive counsellors.
