Labelling Maps, Plans & Diagrams
Tips for IELTS Listening Test
Srey Norint, ACE Teacher
IELTS test takers often encounter three main challenges when labelling a map, plan or diagram:
- Firstly, a lack of knowledge related to the vocabulary being used
- Secondly, it can feel as if there is too much information in the recording to process as you not only need to listen for key words, but also understand the description or directions to get the answer
- Thirdly, the pressure of sitting any listening test and having to keep up with what is said, can impede a test takers’ ability to visualize and process information correctly

Familiarization
Get to know the words and phrases commonly used for giving directions and to indicate where people, places and objects are positioned. At the start of the test, before the recording, look at all the visual information and clues, and anticipate what you are going to hear. Think about how the different elements relate to each other and try to visualize the speakers’ physical context.
Synonyms
Remember, the speaker will not always ‘say’ the answer and synonyms and antonyms are frequently used to test your vocabulary and understanding. Rather than waiting for the right words, try to understand their meaning and the wider context they are being used in.
Still Not Sure?
You only have one chance to listen so pay attention, stay awake and if you cannot get the answer, write something pertinent or relevant because no marks are deducted for wrong answers. There is NO negative marking in the IELTS.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Knowing lots of strategies does not make you an expert. Regular practice and practiced use of different strategies, and knowing which ones to use, is a must. The same strategy might not work for every student, so you should experiment with different tips and tricks on their own to find out what works best for you.
