Business Principles
By Paul Bauer, Samdech Pan BEP Teacher

The BEP program has been up and running since January 2013. The program was established at the Santhor Mok campus and has since branched out to all ACE campuses.  It has proven to be a great asset to students participating in the program, and it continues to move forward in leaps and bounds as the curriculum develops ever more innovative ways to teach business English.

The BEP courses are ideally suited to not only Cambodians wanting to build confidence in the workplace and advancement in their careers, but also to other nationalities pursuing similar goals. All the courses offer 45-hour sessions over ten weeks which are scheduled to accommodate students’ work commitments. Teachers also tailor lessons to suit students’ needs.

Teachers research a range of resources to design lessons, such as authentic material relevant to current business issues. Included in the curriculum are lessons where teachers use local business news in their classes to provide relevant material. For example, a teacher could assign students the task of writing a report to a ministry about a particular issue, such as crop insurance or outsourcing of garbage collection.

The program begins at BEP 1 where students learn everything from writing emails to conducting meetings and networking. Higher levels, such as BEP 6 and BEP 7, focus on making presentations, interpreting graphs, and role playing activities. For example, students could be tasked to manage customer complaints.

After this level, students’ skills are developed to include report writing, holding negotiations, and develop mission statements. The advanced levels not only bring together all the work skills learned in previous courses, but also the skill set necessary for advancement in their careers.

Smaller class sizes in the BEP program mean that teachers can offer more individual attention and readily seek out specific needs that students may have. The BEP program creates an opportunity for instructors to facilitate a variety of work-based skills.

Students have progressed more confidently using the newly acquired business language techniques offered in BEP. They have also become more prepared to present themselves in the business environment. It also creates an opportunity for people from different professional backgrounds in the business community to come together to share their experiences.

Students’ Mission Statements for ACE’s Business English Program

By Tin Mohamatrosaly, Him Rotha, and Seam Seavling, BEP Advanced 3

One task advanced business students are required to complete is writing a mission statement for an organisation. The students chose to write one for ACE. ACE's Business English Program helps students meet the challenges of communicating effectively and confidently in the workplace.

I have been studying the BEP Advanced course for four terms. I found that it helps to improve my writing, speaking and listening. It especially links to my current job because I have to communicate with businesses around the world. It is a fantastic course.  I would recommend other students to take this course after they finish GEP.
